Dan Sugalski, who is writing the Parrot VM for Perl 6 (and possibly other dynamic languages, which don't fit well into the world of Java and .NET (although Miguel de Icaza disputes this)) has posted a series of "what the heck is?" articles, with more to come. Quite a good summary of some language/VM issues.
